Woman hit with $100K in parking fines at O'Hare, blames ex
CHICAGO, April 11 (UPI) -- A Chicago judge has dismissed a lawsuit by a woman fighting $105,000 in parking fines by blaming an ex-boyfriend for abandoning a car registered to her.
Jennifer Fitzgerald's lawsuit against
the city of Chicago and her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Preveau, alleges the $105,000
in unpaid parking tickets were a result of Preveau -- who was the primary
driver of the 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo they purchased for $600 in Fitzgerald's
name -- abandoning the vehicle in the employee parking lot at at O'Hare
International Airport, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.
Fitzgerald said she could not retrieve
the car from the lot because she does not have access to the employee lot at
O'Hare and Preveau was the only one who had keys for the vehicle.
Judge Thomas Allen dismissed the
lawsuit Wednesday, saying Fitzgerald's attorney had not done enough to fight
the tickets with the city's Administrative Hearings Department. Allen gave Fitzgerald
one month to refile the suit, but urged the parties to reach an agreement out
of court.
The city said it had offered to resolve
the matter for $4,460, which would include $2,000 in parking tickets and
penalties Fitzgerald had incurred with a different vehicle, but Fitzgerald
refused. Fitzgerald said she refused the offer because Prevau refused to pay a
share of the settlement.
